Kathryn Starke is an urban elementary school literacy specialist, children’s author, public speaker, and the founder/CEO of Creative Minds Publications and Consulting, a global educational company. Kathryn has her BS degree in elementary education and her Master’s degree in Literacy and Culture and has taught in inner city/Title I schools in Richmond, Virginia for a decade. She wrote her first book, Amy’s Travels, as a social studies teaching tool for her own students and colleagues; today the book has been released in its second edition and used in school curriculum throughout the nation and on six continents. She developed Creative Minds Publications to create and market engaging and educational materials for children, parents, and teachers. Through Creative Minds Publications, Kathryn travels to urban schools and organizations throughout the nation to promote literacy and exemplify quality literacy instruction for all children. She is a public speaker and a freelance writer for parenting and educational magazines.


Amy’s Travels

Amy’s Travels is a multicultural children’s book based on the true story of the author’s dear friend Amy. This social studies resource is the first children’s picture book to teach all seven continents. Amy’s Travels teaches the culture, diversity, and geography of our world through the eyes of a young Latina girl. The second edition of this book is complete with K-5 lesson plans and a comprehensive book guide.

Kathryn’s Cause:

Reach Out and Read Virginia (www.rorva.org)  is an affiliate of the national Reach Out and Read nonprofit organization.  Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children(birth to five years old) to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Reach Out and Read Virginia currently operates programs in 148 health centers and hospitals.  They annually serve over 121,500 children, distributing over 215,500 books.
