I was born in Birmingham, Alabama, 69 years ago. Currently I live in Huntsville, Alabama, which is a little over 100 miles north of Birmingham. I didn’t get to Huntsville via Interstate 65. Rather, I arrived here after living in Trussville and Childersburg, Alabama; Palatka and Jacksonville, Florida; Georgia, South Carolina, Indiana, Texas, Vietnam, Mobile (Alabama), Laurel (Mississippi), Memphis, and Mentone, Alabama.

I’ve been a construction worker, soldier, corporate manager, car dealer, minister, professional speaker, small business owner, and writer. I’ve been married four times, bankrupt twice, homeless once, and a millionaire once.

I live, very happily, with my wife, Christina, whose CV is as long (or longer) than mine.

I love to learn, read, write, and network with new friends.

Fourth and Forever – To escape the lingering sorrow of his wife’s death, Josh Edwards, forty-four, a retired Army helicopter pilot, journeys with his son to Missoula, Montana to start life anew. Josh’s son, Bobby, enrolls at The University of Montana, where he hopes to make the football team as a walk-on. Josh, a skilled football kicker and passer, is observed by the Grizzlies coach as he and Bobby work out on the practice field. When tryouts arrive, Josh finds himself being invited to join the team. Thus begins a season of trials and tribulation where Josh becomes mentor and father-figure to his teammates, as the University of Montana Grizzlies make a run for the Division I National Championship. Fourth and Forever is about football, relationships, love, integrity, and honor.

Southern Investigation – Bill Simmons, David Hendricks, and Robert Hightower served almost three years together in Vietnam, leaving only when they were “wounded out.” They, along with Shirley Jacobson, a widow whose husband was killed in Vietnam, formed Southern Investigation, a commercial private investigation company. David, seriously wounded when he and Bill intervened to thwart a convenience store robbery attempt, required a helicopter evacuation. That was the beginning of Southern Investigation’s involvement in a POW rescue that involved the DEA and President Ronald Regan. Southern Investigation is the story of Vietnam Veterans facing the effects of war – meaningful relationship – and high level esoteric practices…

Another Place Another Time –Leonard Jacobson’s life changed the day he met Whispers. Thirty years later he wrote the story. It began this way, “The day I met Whispers, I was nineteen and he was one. From the day we met, we were not apart for a single day for almost fifteen years. I cannot imagine what my life would have been without Whispers, and frankly, I don’t even want to think about it. This is our story, my dog, Whispers’ and mine.” Another Place Another Time is about men, women, dogs, love, war, and oh yes, time travel.

Truth – Yours, Mine. Ours (Coming Soon)

Twenty-five years after the war, a Vietnam veteran and a Vietnam War protester meet as if by chance and begin a conversation about the war, their lives, and life itself. They continue that conversation for three and a-half years through journals which move back-and-forth between Alabama and British Columbia. Then they meet again, and a beautiful love story begins. They constructed these memoirs much like a photo album- a one page glimpse into the many events and thoughts of their lives running concurrently, offering not only their personal experiences but also a flavor of the times. Their insightfulness and honesty present a unique look into the 60s generation, the Vietnam War, and love.

Bert’s Cause:

Heifer International (http://www.heifer.org/)
Started by a farmer after WWII who carried dairy cattle to Europe to offset starvation, the organization provides a variety of agricultural solutions to starvation and poverty by training a requesting family in their choice of animal or crop husbandry, so that they can use their choice to feed themselves and produce excess for income. It also requires that they share offspring with another family so that the project revitalizes communities, not just individuals. It works wondrously to build health and wealth throughout the world. Christina and I have purchased so far, two water buffaloes for Vietnam.
